Escape, Leiden, The Netherlands, 2005

As I photographed this mannequin in a Leiden shop window, I thought first of a ghost. The light was creating a reflection on the glass, subtly fragmenting the figure. A shadow crosses the middle of the body, separating the head and shoulders from the rest. Light and shadow also create an illusion on the building’s façade. The brick wall symbolizes a barrier, yet the black shadow that cuts diagonally across it implies otherwise. It suggests a fire escape to me, even though none was there. When I looked at this image for the first time, the ghostly figure seemed to be gazing longingly at that shadow. I thank the imagination of a Leiden window dresser for creating the display itself. I am essentially photographing the art of another artist here. However, I’ve also used my camera to take advantage of the interplay of light and shadow on the mannequin, the glass window, and the brick wall in ways the window dresser probably could not imagine.

The wonderful Hungarian photographer Agnes Csernova came to this image last year, studying it again and again, and finally saw a woman facing a monster. The gifted St. Louis photographer Ceci is its second visitor, and she sees this image as a metaphor for the subjugation and abuse of women. Actually, this store is simply trying to sell dresses with this display. Such is the power of expressive photography. It can alter the intended meaning of its subjects, and can draw responses based on the context that viewers may carry within themselves. I can see how strongly you must feel on the subject of sexual harrassment, abuse, and subjugation. This image has triggered these feelings in you, and you find in the interplay of light and shadow, as well as in the posture and the props, enough reasons to see even enslavement here. I had nothing of the sort in mind when I made this photograph, but after your comment, Ceci, I see a symbolic woman dressed as an object of desire and bathed in light, frozen forever in a cell of glass, brick and shadow. I leave the rest open to your interpretation.

This evocative image could be a strong metaphor for the subjugation of women throughout the world. The mannequin's swathed eyes, as though she's blindfolded, her curved, almost caved-in shoulders, the tilt of her head as though she can't see where she's going, the suggestion of a portable hospital screen to the right, and the strange limp stiffness and gesture of her hands -- all seem to speak of how women are dominated and abused in so many cultures. The looming black shadow to the right represents rampant greed which drives people to sell, trade and use females as objects to make money.

That's why I posted this image here, Agnes. To get your mind working. It's here in this gallery because it takes good advantage of the interplay of light and shadow. Now you must read this light and shadow as symbols of expression, and decide what this image says to you. Have fun. And please do come back.

I'v been here since days and days...and...couldnt comment on this shot.....for some reason..it make me think..but..i cant get the perfect idea....The only thing what i got about it,is that this shot could be the cover of the book of the adult version of the beauty and the beast...cuz the doll look like a pretty girl, and that shadow could be a face of a monster.....

I will came here back....i will think of this more...

Good night.
A.
