Cave Salamander - Eurycea lucifuga

Little Stony Trail, Jefferson National Forest, VA

The Cave is a very long-tailed salamander related to the Two-lined Salamander (see New Jersey Amphibians: Northern Two-lined Salamander). They live in caves, near streams, or in this case, in a hollow underneath the exposed roots of a tree. The tail is quite strong, and this one hung from my finger by its tail at one point.
