Northern Grey-cheeked Salamander - Plethodon montanus

Linville Gorge Wilderness, Pisgah National Forest, NC

Notice the slimmer tail, narrower neck, and overall wiry appearance compared with the hybrid salamander. Although hard to tell in the photos, the hybrid is also a darker shade of gray, almost black, and has scattered white spots on the sides and a few on the back (not visible in the photo). I suspect these traits are borrowed from Southern Appalachian Salamander genes.
