This region supports many species in the genus Plethodon (see New Jersey Amphibians: Redback Salamander). Many are very similar in size, color, and/or habitat requirements, so hybrids are bound to occur. I suspect this is a hybrid between Jordan's and Southern Appalachian Salamanders, although it could be a purebred, abnormal version of either.
