Black-bellied Salamander - Desmognathus quadramaculatus

Santeetlah Creek, Nantahala National Forest, NC

The "Blackbelly" is a large, darkly patterned member of the Dusky salamander family (see New Jersey Amphibians: Dusky Salamander). The adults I saw were between 5 and 8 inches long. They blend in extremely well with river rocks.
