Otternes Farm

Picture from fjordadventures.no

True to Norway form, our last day in the fjords was overcast and rainy. We continued with our original plan and started off to walk the 9km along the fjord to Aurland. About midway we stopped at Otternes Farm, a 17th centruey farm with 27 restored buildings. I was impressed by the number of tools and everyday items that were well preserved and the young girl that gave us the tour had a lot of interesting information about daily life on the farm.

After an hour or so at the farm we continued to Aurland. We walked around town, went in a few shops and a church, and went by the visitors center. We talked to a nice man who told us about the history of the area and the large amount of immigrants that ended up in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Aurland has a sister town in Iowa and he had attended a Norwegian festival there (I figured there had to be a good reason to visit the US and only go to Iowa).

Aurland is a starting point for a lot of good hiking, but the weather never cleared so we caught a bus back to Flam. Later in the evening we did take a walk around Flam, carefully avoiding the big black slugs everywhere (blech!).
