Male Lesser Goldfinch on star thistle

Goldfinches eat the star thistle seeds. Star thistles were not native to this area. I don't know where they came from but now they are everywhere. They grow to be 4 to 5 feet tall and provide good cover for young deer and other animals. You don't want to have to walk through a field of it, I can tell you that.

Very nice, of both bird and exotic invasive! We had areas on our property in northern CA where starthistle was rampant 15 years ago, but is now mostly eradicated. Luckily it is an annual and pulls up easily. Sad to say, it germinates at ANY time of year, hides well in grasses, and puts out thousands of seeds!
