Test Drive

June 22

Office

My EF 17-40 f/4 USM L arrived so I took it for a test drive to see if everything was functional. I think I'm going to like this one. The extra 3mm (4mm with the 1.3 factor) over the EF 20-35 should be nice to work with.

Conversion to B&W using PS CS Channel Mixer in monochrome. Settings: 100 (Red), 0 (Green), 0 (Blue) & -2 (Constant)

Nice - the b/w is great.
Guest 24-Jun-2005 23:07
sharp is an understatement! excellent shot, I'm not sure which I prefer the color or the channel mixer b&w

Very good. Like the sharpness of the b&w.

Gorgeous shot! Stunning in B&W! And thanks for sharing your technique! I've never tried the Channel Mixer. Makes for a much wider and dramatic tonal range than just desaturating the image. Beautiful! Vote!

Great shot. The lens looks like it works well.

Great stuff....you'll love the 17-40 it's probably my favourite lens

Scott,
Great shot! Enjoy your 17-40... great lens. I like the B&W done with the channel mixer better than the desaturated version. It has more pop. The color looks wonderful too.

Can't wait to get this lens. Beautiful shot.

Lovely image. You are going to have lots of "fun" with this new toy. I like the channel mixer best, the small flowers have a stronger white in their petals. Just MHO though.

You will most definitely get a lot of enjoyment from the 17-40L. Very sharp from looking at this image and the contrast of L glass is evident.

I agree with David, it's interesting to see the flowers in their stages of growth. Have fun with the new lens!
David Clunas22-Jun-2005 16:35
Nice image, like the varying stages of the flower heads
As for the Channel Mixer, hard one to choose, I would have put the Red to 65% and the Green 35% ish. This opens the bg up a little more but it does change the emphasis on the flower head which is nice.

Your new toy performed very well on the test drive. Love the shot. Well done and presented beautifully!

A new toy (the lens)? I'm jealous. Looks good. Nice clarity and contrast all the way through. Good B&W tones with the conversion, too.

Thank for sharing your work, I've never used the channel mixer, I'll next time :)
I'm still learning... nice picture!, all three looks great.

Wonderful black and white (though I'm a color person). This flower lends itself to b&w.W
