17th June 2005 bishop's palace

Hidden away, almost overgrown.
This is the former bishop's palace at Fetternear.
Built in the early 13th century.

"The building and estate was given to The Leslies of Balquain in 1566 in return for their services in protecting William Gordon, Bishop of Aberdeen and preventing the destruction and vandalization of the Cathedral at Aberdeen by the Reformers. In June 1566, the Bishop gave William Leslie, 9th Baron of Balquhain, Sheriff of Aberdeenshire, the Barony of Fetternear and all buildings and structures thereon, as well as numerous other lands. They lived there until the building was badly damaged by fire in 1919." (Aberdeenshire council)

I never knew it was there,
a short cycle ride away.

Excellent b/w! Great tones in the shadows.... I like the way the castle almost glows along the roofline.

Fabulous shot!! So dramatic in b&w! Love the dark foreground, and the subtle hint of detail showing on the metal fence running along the right side of the photo. The lighting draws my eye beautifully to the eerie and hauntingly gorgeous palace. Vote!

Did you go look for Sleeping Beauty...I think there's every chance she's in there. :>) Nice moody shot, Andy.

I agree with Zak - though I must say, if it's not a block of flats then it's probably an hotel or a golf course!!! Lovely shot
Zak17-Jun-2005 18:54
someone should restore it before a big company comes and makes it into flats! tsk
