Due to the damp in Venice, fresco painting did not fare well. So Venice glories in oil painting.
Titian painted this "Assunta" (Assumption of the Virgin into Heaven) in oil on wood panel for the church of Sta. Maria Glorioso dei Frari, better known as the "Frari".
Painted between 1516-1518, the painting is about 11x 22 feet. Because of its large figures and broad gestures, the painting is able to hold its own against the strong backlighting.
This is probably my favorite painting in the world , and I have to visit and photograph it everytime I come to Venice !
