"Grommet" is a wonderful term.
Traditionally, it is used to refer to a young surfer. Usually, a grommet still has the enthusiasm and idealism that can be so tragically lost as we age and gain experience.
Many in the climbing community have adpoted this term to described young climbers. These up-and-coming climbers are supported, encouraged, and protected by the community. I got to see a little of this during an assignment to shoot the youth competition team at the New Jersey Rock Gym.
I started climbing at an age much too late for me to every have been a grommet. I'm glad that these kids have found climbing and the climbing community has found them...because we will all be stronger for it.
