Cimabue's late 13th c. Crucifix which hung over the high altar of Sta. Croce was one of the greatest tragedies of the 1966 flood in Florence.
It was pulled down by the swirling flood waters, and was damaged to the extent that it could not be restored. It now hangs in the refectory.
