Phoenix Jaycees Rodeo Assembly at Washington Elementary School in about 1974. Ass't Principal Bill Chilcoat on the Bull. The clown is the famous rodeo clown, Emmett Kelly. In those days the annual Phoenix Rodeo was a big deal. The Rodeo parade was heavily attended and schools were given a day off to attend it. This was before the Fiesta Bowl Parade became the bigger event. School assemblies were held with Tex Earnhardt's bull, to publicize the rodeo. The emcee is Duncan MacQuarrie with the microphone, with teachers Cheryl Long and Ruth Strang watching in the background. The photo was taken in the interior courtyard of the old Washington Elementary School Old Main building [demolished in 1975] constructed in 1914. Duncan and I worked together when we were in college in the late 50's at the Paradise Chapel Mortuary, so he had to have me get on the bull. Photo taken by 8th grade science teacher Don Metzler.
