This is the view of the Basilica from the window in our hotel room at night.
You can see the "lower church" lit on the lower left, as well as the spot-lit facade .
This beautiful Basilica, dating from the 13th century, is built on two levels, the lower part is dark and rather mysterious,
and the upper church which houses the famous frescoes by Giotto and his school,
depicting the Life of St. Francis of Assisi.
Earthquake damage to the frescoes from several years ago has been beautifully repaired.
