The red and yellow of the shield are the traditional
colors of the artillery. The fieldpiece depicted, used
in the 16th century, is the forerunner of modern artillery
and, with the guided missile superimposed on top, denotes the
modern extreme in the history of artillery. The school was
originally established on 18 June 1911 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma
under the name School of Fire for Field Artillery.

The school's motto is "Cedat Fortuna Peritis"
(skill is better than luck.)
