New York Harbor

The lightship "Frying Pan" is one of 13 remaining lightships [of more than 100] built by the Coast Guard as floating lighthouses. Built in 1929, it guarded Frying Pan Shoals, 30 mi off Cape Fear, NC, from 1930 to 1965. After being abandoned for 10 yrs at an old oyster cannery in the Chesapeake Bay, she sank due to a broken pipe. She was underwater for 3 yrs before being raised for salvage and renovated in 1989. Her current home is Pier 63 in Manhattan, by the Chelsea Piers. She is now a party boat for weddings, concerts and other events, and is listed on both the New York State and Federal Registers of Historic Places.
