228th Bde

Signal Brigade South Carolina

Organized 1964
228th Signal Group
in Saluda, South Carolina

in 1968 the 228th Signal Detachment moved to Spartanburg
and was the first National Guard unit sent to the Persian
Gulf in August 1990.

The 228th Signal Brigade is one of the premier signal
organizations in the United States Army. It provides
signal support to all five unified commands of the
Department of Defense (European Command, Central Command,
Southern Command, Pacific Command, and Atlantic Command).
Among its assigned and attached organizations are high
priority Echelon Above Corps and Echelon Below Corps Force
Support Package units that are early deployers.

The torch, adapted from that of the Statue of Liberty,
reflects the most fundamental type of signal communications
as well as the unit's home location. The three flashes
symbolize speed, electronic technology, and accuracy.
The juxtaposition of the two elements is expressive of the
proud traditions and present capabilities of the brigade.
