V

The Fifth Corps was activated for WW II duty on October
20th, 1940, with Headquarters at Camp Beauregard, Louisiana.
The Corps supervised the training of several of the National
Guard Divisions before embarking for the European Theater in
January of 1942.

On June 6th, 1944 (D-Day), the Fifth Corps assaulted and
established a Headquarters ashore on Omaha Beach with the
Corps commander's command post located only 500 yards from
the front lines. After fighting off enemy counterattacks
and widening the beachhead, Corps elements participated
in the Operation Cobra breakout and helped to close the
Falaise-Argentan Gap on August 21st.

The shoulder patch worn by the V Corps during WW II was based
on a design approved by the AEF on December 3rd, 1918. The five
sides of the patch and the five triangles formed by the lines
suggest the unit's number, and the colors blue and white represent
the distinguishing flag for a Corps.
