10 January 1945 - 1957.

The Sixth Army was activated on January 25th, 1943 at Fort Sam
Houston (San Antonio) Texas, from personnel previously assigned
to the Third Army.

General Walter Krueger, the former Third Army Commander,
assumed command of the Army and joined the advance
party in Australia. The Sixth Army began carrying out operations
in the Pacific area in April of 1943 under the name of "Task Force
Alamo" and continued using this designation until September of 1944.
Sixth Army elements captured the Kiriwina and Woodlark Islands in
July of 1943 and continued a 2,700 mile advance across the Pacific
which ended with occupation duty in Japan after the capture of the
Philippines.

The Sixth Army was credited with the capture of the Western end
of New Britain, seizure of the Admiralty Islands, participation
in the Hollandia-Aitape Operation, the capture of Biak and
Soepiori Island, three assaults in the New Guinea Campaign,
and the occupation of Morotai. During the battle for

The Sixth Army patch design that was worn during WW II was
approved on January 10th, 1945. The six-pointed star suggests
the unit number, and the colors red and white represent the
distinguishing flags of the numbered armies.
