38th

38th Infantry Division:
The Cyclone Division.

When the U.S. entered WW II, the 38th Division was
allocated to the Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia
National Guard and was in training at Camp Shelby,
Mississippi. After the Division was activated on
January 17th, 1941, it participated in the 1941 and the
1942 Louisiana maneuvers, and also trained for amphibious
landings at Carabelle, Florida. The 38th was reassigned
to Camp Livingston, Louisiana, in March of 1943 and its
early WW II mission was to protect the Gulf Coast while
also acting as a training Division and furnishing cadres
to many different units as well as over 4,000 officer
candidates. In January of 1944, the Division embarked for
Hawaii and became part of the defense force for Oahu while
receiving additional training. The 38th embarked for New
Guinea in July and landed in the Oro Bay area and helped
mop up enemy remnants. The Division embarked for Leyte in
December arriving there in time for the 149th Infantry
Regiment to meet and defeat a Japanese force of paratroopers
trying to seize the Buri, Bayug, and Sa

The shoulder patch of the 38th Division is based on a WW I
design that was approved by AEF on October 30th, 1918. The
monogram letters "CY" represent the "Cyclone Division." When
the Division was in training in WW I at Camp Shelby, Mississippi,
a storm levelled all of the Division tents and the unit promptly
adopted the "cyclone" motto. While not stated in the request for
approval, flags for Infantry Divisions are half red and half
blue and unit designations are in white, the colors that are
used in the design.
