I wanted to see how deep the soil was, so I dug this foot-and-a-half-deep hole
the white at the bottom is rocks,
which I guess the city originally filled the brick enclosure with before they covered them with soil
so the top eighteen inches of the garden is awesomely rich, soft topsoil
