rome 05-338.jpg

While in Rome, photograph the Romans...well, at least the reporters. This was Pope's John Paul II last Easter, just days before his death. There was a sea of people who came to share what they knew in their hearts to be the last Easter with this dynamic figure and the leader of the Roman Cathlic Church. Earlier that day, I was able to see a hand out a window waving a hankerchief of hello. that would be the Pope's last Easter farewell. (Mark 9:39 "No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad against me, for whoever is not against us, is for us!")

You layer this image nicely, Gil, to bring the viewer into it. In a sense all of us become the TV cameraman, as we watch this spectacle unfold. This image tells the story of the news coverage very well. You have abstracted the cameraman by shooting him from behind, the correspondent standing on the box is incongruous, and the huge crowds express the human value behind this image very well -- ritual, communication, and historical presence.
