Irondequoit Creek, Penfield NY

I'm a bit surprised this image came out as well as it did. I was walking a path alongside this creek when a large bird swooped down and landed on a tree on the opposite bank. It is a Pileated Woodpecker, and the first one I have seen outside of a zoo. These birds are the size of a small hawk. It was moving up the tree fairly quickly and I had nothing to brace myself against, so it is completely hand held at 300 mm with a fairly slow lens.

other sizes: small medium original auto
