BRISTOL BOXKITE

OLD WARDEN AIRFIELD

Yesterday I headed down south for the Spring air day at the Shuttleworth Collection, based at Old Warden airfield in Bedfordshire. The airshows there are held several times a year and, unlike most airshows, concentrate on older aircraft. The main part of the show consists mainly of aircraft from the two world wars, there were only 2 jets present (a Provost & a T-33 Shooting Star) so there are no modern warbirds present. At the end of the day, if the winds are light enough, they bring out the 'Edwardians', those early flying machines from before the 1914-18 war. Some are original, but only fly in perfect conditions for obvious reasons, two are exact replicas - an Avro triplane and this Bristol Boxkite. Yesterday, the Avro found the conditions acceptable and had a good fly round at altitude. The Bristol is a bit more fussy and made 3 attempts, low level passes along the runway, but conditions were not calm enough for the pilot to risk taking it higher.

I have a lot more shots from this show, but I have no idea when I will get them processed - I have a backlog that is rapidly growing - especially as the skies were a bit grey, despite the sunshine. I think I will have to cut out the planes and stick 'em on a nice blue sky with fluffy clouds.
