When I saw this sign Zweifel on the former Palast of the Republic, in april 2005, it looked as it came straight out of my heart.
Doubt. I was applying for my visa for Australia, and I was full of doubt if I was doing the right thing.
Migrating permanently at my age to Australia.
The “Palace of the Republic” in the center of the city, built by the government of the former GDR. Until 1953 ,
the ruin of the 1945 damaged town castle stood at this place.
You can see parts of the excavated fundaments.
The German parliament decided to rebuild the castle, but there´s a lot of resistance against the removing of the palace.
The installation was from the Norwegian artist Lars Ramberg.
He installed the word “Zweifel” - doubt - at the roof, heading the 15 years ongoing debate about the future of this palace.
In february 2006 finally after a lot of discussions, the German parlament decided for not saving the Palace of the Republic.
The demolition started in february 2006.
Due to the amount of asbestos in the building it will take up to 2008 to finalise the demolition.
And then they will rebuild the Prussian castle!!
