This is a pretty ugly for a sunset, and is my first attempt at HDR, but it illustrates the concept:

Both the green grass on the earthen dam as well as detail in the clouds immediately around the sun are visible.

The S-shape of the toning curve was used to brighten the grass a bit and
adjust the gradients introduced by the Local Adaptation conversion to 16-bits.
