24th April 2005 - aaaahhhhhhhh!

We’ve been totally entranced by the lambs this weekend. They’re everywhere and there are protective farmers with HUGE signs saying ‘lambing – keep your dogs on leads, don’t let them worry sheep’. OK – no problem….we love the sheep so we’re completely on board with that.

I’m again in the thrall of people like Penny Roots and John Richardson who have better pics than this every day of the week BUT I have an excitable Border Collie tied to my leg and that’s not the biggest turn-on for a new Mum who is looking after her offspring. My red waterproof coat probably doesn’t endear me to the ewes either!

So many lambs. So many little moving balls of wool with dirty knees!

DM and I have had our arms nearly ripped out of their sockets by R&A….one of whom is just madly trying to run around and the other is desperate for a closer look at the sheep. Archie is telling us ‘I know I’m supposed to do something here but I’m not sure what…..I’ll just whimper and try to run towards them'. Ha – he’s on his lead!!!!

The sight of Mum’s hind quarters being lifted off the ground when the lamb is trying to locate a nipple is just so funny and the tails wagging as the target is located is hilarious too.

This shot was taken when we were walking at Cheesewring today. Later, when we were in the car and en route back to Sandhurst and my personal grindstone, we were sheep dodging on the road through Minions. My heart always lurches when I see a ewe sat on the side of the road – what if it’s been hit by a car and can’t get up???? Usually though, it’s just decided on a nap and the roadside is as good a place as any!

With one or two lambs in tow, it doesn’t seem quite so safe and we saw a ewe with a lamb next to her, literally a foot off the tarmac of the road. Suddenly the ewe jumped up and the lamb followed. Did they run? No! The ewe simply stood up so the lamb could clamp itself to Mum’s nipple and have a drink.

How did Mum know that the lamb needed sustenance? I don’t know – she just did!

Anyway, it has been a great pleasure watching this little dance of life today – we’ve all (DM, dogs and me) thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle.

Last year I was acting like a whirling dervish and two years ago, I was applauding my company for having the guts to relaunch in the pink!

Linda - that is easy ... lambs ALWAYS want a drink!!

I'm glad you're enjoying the countryside and I personally think it is our diverse agriculture that makes a lot of what it is? Shame that the powers that be are starting to think that maybe it would be better to let it all 'degenerate' back to scrub and rely on our food from abroad? Just another of the marvoulous plans of 'New Labour'?? By the way I thought your rant was bang on even though you'll guess I've never been a labour supporter! Least you knew where you were with 'old Labour'? Don't worry - I'm not going to blow the Conservatives trumpet either ... personally I think whatever party - they're all a load of wankers!! (Sorry - that was as polite a word I could think of)

Lambing finished here yesterday and last cow of the current calving 'year' calved tonight!! no more sleepless nights untill September :))

Oh - like the picture too Linda!!

lol - Linda, you're as soft as I am - this weekend I stood and watched a sleeping lamb lying in a field for AGES till it woke up, 'cos I was worried it was ill or dead!

You did well to get this with a dog around!

Precious photo and wonderful story. People who appreciate these kind of things are what I call "human."
