18-APR-2005 Trillium erectum

18 Apr 2005

Thousand Acre Swamp, Penfield NY

Red Trillium or "Wake Robin"
The Tamron lens seems to shine when taking macro shots.
I have not been impressed with long distance images at 300 mm (with tripod).

The Thousand Acre Swamp is a wildlife sactuary owned by The Nature Conservancy and is located in the Rochester suburb of Penfield. It is completely surrounded by housing developments, and I'm guessing many of the local residents are totally unawre of what they have in their backyard!

White trillium does turn pinkish when it gets old, but this species is a true red trillium. The reds also bloom earlier than the whites. The red trillium would be long gone in WV by now. Meanwhile in upstate NY, the whites have not even come out of the ground yet.

I couldn't pass this one up. We only have the white trillium in WV right now. I've been told the purple ones are just the white turning color as they age. Don't know if that's true or not. Anyway, beautiful close up.

Beautiful! Looks like I better get to the woods and see if we have any out yet here.
