Belle married John Graves. Together they moved to Flint, Michigan, U.S.A., in 1866. Theirs was not an easy marriage as John had been in the American Civil War and suffered from the ill effects of several battles, probably with what we now know as "post traumatic stress disorder". He became increasingly mean and violent. Eventually John and Belle divorced, and he entered an old soldiers' home in Dayton, Ohio. In 1925 he left the old soldiers' home and went to Spring Arbor, Michigan to be closer to one of his children during his last days. He died the same year.
