Isabella "Belle" (Johnston) Graves, 1845-1918 (#3)

Flint, Michigan, U. S. A.

Isabella (Johnston) Graves, 1845-1918.

Daughter of Robert "Red Robin" Johnston and Mary "Mae" Frances (McQueen) Johnston.

Original image captured by "M.A. Rees, Photographer, No. 60 Cor. Saginaw And Kearsly Sts., Flint, Michigan, Opp. Fenton Hall" in 1869.

Belle married John Graves. Together they moved to Flint, Michigan, U.S.A., in 1866. Theirs was not an easy marriage as John had been in the American Civil War and suffered from the ill effects of several battles, probably with what we now know as "post traumatic stress disorder". He became increasingly mean and violent. Eventually John and Belle divorced, and he entered an old soldiers' home in Dayton, Ohio. In 1925 he left the old soldiers' home and went to Spring Arbor, Michigan to be closer to one of his children during his last days. He died the same year.

From an original tintype photograph, 1869, which was scanned, emailed to me, and restored in 2005. The tintype image measures 2"x3-1/8". full exif

Johnston-Graves-Montgomery
Since Frances Graves, pictured as an infant, is my Great Grandmother, this would make Isabella my Great Great Grandmother! I've visited once before and I see that you've made some changes and improvements. I'd like to correct the information about Great Great Grandpa Graves. It is true that he lived at the Old Soldier's Home in Dayton, Ohio, at least this was listed as his official residence. He was a frequent visitor to my Great Grandparent's home in Spring Arbor,Michigan (Frances Graves/Hiram Montgomery)and moved out of the Military Home in 1925. John Graves died in Spring Arbor, Michigan in 1925. John notified the Military Home in Dayton, of his change of address on September 4, 1925.
