Oldlady, Off Dongjiadu, Shanghai 2004

Two sisters stopped me and asked me to take a picture of their mother. This lady was almost blind. It seemed strange to me that she even smiled. She has been through the last 50 years in China and probably did not not who I was and what I was doing. I saw resilience in her face. A smile with gritted teeth.

A walnut shell cracking a grin through broken wrinkles of soiled years.Having been seasoned by generations of toils that one soul could miraculously bear.Ground down deeper by the penance of circumstance.Dimming her view to a mole's glimmer. Now nurtured, perhaps ,by the comfort of companions and a few simple pleasures of the day.Yet there is an endearing wink of stoic joy.Like a crippled oak that can still bear a fresh spring leaf.

A touching picture. At first I thought it was a man, but your text and some details reminded me that it is a woman (earrings, some details in the coat). It is interesting to see how in pictures what matters is often the basic human being and the sex does not matter. It reminds me of my own picture "Palm Sunday"http://www.pbase.com/eb2005/image/41842562 . Often people think it is a man, but it was a woman because I remember - and little details (scarf, girl bike) confirm her identity. The sex is not that important, but the essence of the picture is. Here, you have a wonderful human being.
