Playing in the backyard, Shanghai 2005

She is looking at my wife and baby daughter. This is her playground, and I fealt we were intruding.

Yes Ruth, and in a place Shanghai, space is at a premium. The majority here live their daily lives on the pavement, eating, playing, working and sleeping. It is easy to feel the intruder. In Shanghai, the Private is the Public.

yes, i can see what you mean about feeling like an intruder. she seems to be pulling her toy towards her and looking up suspiciously, as if guarding her territory. it's a total clash of space...the little girl sees that space as hers, her playground, a place to play with her toys, while to other people it is a place for perhaps vending, socialising, walking, and observing. the public versus the private, both contending for space in the same place.
