Flipping April 12

I sat at my desk today, wishing I was somewhere else - anywhere else - trying to make a news article out of non-news.
I spotted some kids across the street and watched in amazed fascination as two pre-teen girls spit at each other, one of them clutching a stuffed bear, and then ran off acting like best friends. Then I saw this girl ride up on her scooter. She dropped it in the doorway of the building, then with joyful abandon began to flip around the metal railing. I remember doing that in elementary school, spinning around and around until I was dizzy with it and then trying to run, laughing in that unhibited way people seem to lose as they get older. I managed to snap off a couple of shots before she stopped and then hopped back on her scooter to continue down the block. At that moment, I wanted to be out there with her, 10 years old, and running down the street, dizzy.

From Sunday ...

This has made me smile as well... such a free spirited girl. That looks an interesting building on the left.

Colleen, yes, I'm a writer. I've done freelance writing for a long time and am a staff reporter and photographer for a local newspaper. Most of the time I really like what I do; yesterday was an exception and it made me a little wistful to see the girl having so much fun. I actually did think for about 2-1/2 seconds that I should go out there and try to do one of those flips before the reality of ... 'uh, you're a little too tall for that now and all you'd succeed in doing is knocking yourself unconscious...' It was time to take a break from writing for an hour when I realized the 'knocking yourself unconscious' idea actually had a certain appeal. :)

I like how you caught her just then. I remember those flipping days as well. We used to believe we were acrobats, when we were ten and tried all kind of crazy stuff out.
