Cwm Dar and Windber

Had you stood on this spot a century ago the valley floor and mountain side would have looked totally different. Trams full of waste would be hauled up the mountain to be tipped out. You would have been able to looked over at least 15 coal workings from the largest, Bwllfa Dare Colliery at the top of the valley which employed 1,133 men and boys to the smaller levels dug into the mountain employed a handful of workers. At one point in time over 3000 men and boys were employed in the deep dark holes, digging out the valuable high quality Welsh coal. Now the area has been reclaimed and is once more becoming beautiful. Just how beautiful it was before the coal industry came in the early 19th century has to be wondered at.
