Dusky Salamanders (genus Desmognathus) are characterized by their cylindrical bodies, relatively stout hindlegs, and a light line extending downward from the eye to the corner of the mouth (clearly visible here). The pattern of reddish-brown splotches on the back of this young individual blended in perfectly with the small pebbles on the streambed.
