Early Original San Diego Oil Painting

This very large 5'x9' oil painting is a charming view of Anza Borrego Desert, from a position east of Julian, looking northward. For those of us who love San Diego and it's exquisite natural surroundings, we can feel in our hearts the warmth, the clean dry air, the fragrance the depth of quality, the timeless solitude and the contentment of this very special place. It's the kind of beautiful spring day that San Diego is famous for; the desert cactus are blooming in the warm desert sun, and there is still snow melting on the peaks in the distance. The mountain to the right is San Jacinto, showing some details of Idyllwild and Lilly Rock. Beyond the peak lies Palm Springs. To the right of Mt. San Jacinto, you can get a subtle glimpse of the distant haze from the north end of Salton Sea. The mountain to the left is Big Bear, a higher altitude, more snow, but further away. The robust size of this painting is impressive.

The history & provenance of this painting is unknown by me at this time. A mid-90's elderly woman in San Diego last owned it in 2001. She acquired the painting herself about 65 years earlier, with a building in Pacific Beach where she and her husband opened a small deli & neighborhood market. She said nostalgically "it was old at that time." The artist is undetermined for now. What appears to be some letters and a possible clue to who the artist might be can be found at the bottom center of the painting. The painting has not yet been disturbed or removed from the frame for further inspection or clues. This painting is large enough to be a mural. I think it should be hanging in a nice restaurant, hotel, Victorian house, museum or vintage building in old San Diego. I would love to see it somewhere in the the Gaslamp District for everyone to enjoy.

This old piece of San Diego history is looking for a good home. sschutze@aol.com
