This is the red-backed morph for which the species is named. In my own unscientific surveys, I have found that in this area of New Jersey, the lead-backed morph generally outnumbers the red-backed morph by about 3-2. Apparently, elsewhere there are populations that are almost entirely one or the other morph. No one is exactly sure why.
