May He Rest In Peace

The Death of Pope John Paul II

I had the marvelous privilege of meeting Pope John Paul II when he visited New Orleans in 1987. It was a truly wonderful experience to watch him at the educators' conference, the youth rally, and later at the outdoor Mass where the summer heat was scorching followed by a deluge of rain during the service. And, throughout it all the Pope, who was dressed in a magnificent blue-green vestment for the Mass, gave his radiant smile to the thousands who were gathered. He so wanted to see the Mississippi River which he said "I have read about all my life." I deeply regret that he did not see the River while he was here because he was only 2 miles away from it.

NIce tribute. Is so sad loosing a man like him. I had the chance to see him when he came to Veracruz. The first time during his way from the Airport to the "Malecon" where he had a celebration. After that I had that chance for being in that celebration at "El Malecon" I have no words to describe that presence.

Wow Coleen. He indeed touched so many people, Cathoolic or not. And regardless of the political aspects of his papacy he was a man truly gifted in bringing people together. We've lost one of the good guys.

A very beautiful tribute. I love how you shared your experience with us. I remembered the day he became pope, I was only a child back then. It amazes me how long he has done his calling.

Wonderful tribute. This pope was a holy man. Anyone could see that whether they were Catholic or not. It came through even on TV. You are so lucky to have met him.
