An estimated 500 great gray owls have died in Minnesota over the winter. Most of these were killed in collisions with automobiles. These owls have a tendency to fly low and slow across highways and, as such, are prone to being hit. The owl in this picture made it across, but just barely. A motorist just out of the picture did have to hit the brakes to avoid a collision.
