Blue-spotted Salamander - Ambystoma laterale

Morris County, NJ

Blue-spots are members of the mole salamander family (Ambystomatidae). Mole salamanders breed in fish-free, seasonally wet depressions called vernal pools. On rainy nights in early spring, they migrate en masse to these pools. Males generally arrive first to stake out a territory, and then await the females. On this night, we counted 26 males and 3 females crossing one stretch of dirt road.
