The next step is to rebuild the dens so the snakes can finish their hibernation undisturbed. The walls and roof are replaced, the sand is put back in the hole, and the surface covered with dry sand, leaves, and debris to camouflage the site. A few snakes, such as this one, were released as soon as the dens were rebuilt, although most went back to the lab for weighing, measuring, and tagging.
