Once a snake is found, the data collection begins immediately. First, the temperature of the ground is taken where the snake was discovered. Next, a researcher carefully takes the snake's temperature through the cloaca, the opening used for breeding and voiding waste (pictured above). Other measurements such as time of day, depth found, and distance from entrance hole, are also taken.
