March 20 2005:
Hanging On

Just for a change I popped over to West Byfleet to do my shopping today. When I was growing up, it was where my mum used to do her usual shop – it had a couple of grocery stores (Sainsbury’s and International Stores), as well as a Boots and Woolworth. It was somewhat nearer than Woking, but lacked the ‘frills’ such as clothing shops. But hey, I’m talking ‘sixties here and we were very much into basic and essential stuff.

I was amazed that one of those shops still survives just as it has for the past forty years, and that is Henry Cawsey’s electrical business. It doesn’t even have a new fascia or clock, and still proudly displays the word ‘TELEVISION’ on the building as if it was heralding a new age. But I suspect that was erected in the mid fifties when televisions were still a bit new fangled.

I glanced in the window and didn’t see too much on display bar things like electric fans – how long will this last?

Photoshop:
Cropped and Resized
Corrected verticals (well, improved them at least)
Converted to Grayscale
Duotoned using Pantone 154C

This time last year : ‘Electric Blue’

Hello Ray, I like this transportation back to the fifties/sixties image. Thanks for leaving a comment on my dragonfly macros today. I appreciate you taking the time.

Nice shot Ray.
Great composition and treatment.
It reminds me of Woking in the 60's, about where Wollies used to be and the old cinema whose name eludes me now.

Don't see many shops like that anymore! Nice one, Ray. Have you thought about processing it to look like an instamatic snap? I think that would look awesome.

This look great. I am a Guildfordian and find my home town changing every time I visit. It is lovely to see this unchanging image.

This really looks like a 1950's shot!

brilliant execution - looks like it was taken 40 years ago. I do the same thing when I go back to my home town. Check out the dwindling number of shops that were exactly as I remember them from my childhood. None quite so frozen in time as this though. Thanks for sharing.

I doubt it'll last much longer as these shops can't compete with the megastores and the internet is another threat. We had one or two old shops near here but they are closing and reopening as trendy wine-bars or restaurants. It's a shame though.
