Interesting fact: Hummingbirds are well known for their dazzling colors, but most of their feathers are actually brown or black. The glittering colors are not produced by pigment, such as the red in a flower, but by "interference coloration," like the colors of a rainbow.

Male is distinguished by its dark body, long red bill, and forked tail. An interesting fact was discovered by David and Linda Ferry while doing a three year hummingbird banding project in Madera Canyon and Ramsey Canyon in Arizona. The longer the black area on the very tip of the bill, the older the bird.
