A Little Girl's Day at Underwater World

A huge fish. A little girl. I wonder what she was thinking...

A wondrous illusion! This large fish appears to be floating in space above the little girl, and fully capable of snacking on her whenever it wasnts. I love the color of the tank, the golden shine of light from above, the curve of the fish, and the obvious interest from the child. This feels also like a view from parallel universe, where fish and humans all share the same space and interact peacefully.

Fearful for sure! I am worries for that little girl... ans she seemed enjoyed... talk about incongruity!

You are right, Celia. Everything is in the right position here, but the head and expression of the fish is diffused and distant. At least its huge size is working here, as is the incongruity of that child standing "at the bottom of the sea" to confront the monster!

Thanks Phil. I was definitely trying to express awe and curiosity, and this little girl gave me the opportunity to emote these ideas. I did wish that the fish would come closer to the girl so it would look bigger and more fearsome, but alas, my wish did not come true (Yes, we can only dream). But I was lucky that the fish had cooperated somewhat at the right position and that the girl stayed long enough for me to make this picture before running off. Other kids had come by but she was the perfect one - her little pigtails was a symbol of innocence, youth and femininity, which made the incongruity between her and the giant, scaley fish even more apparent.

Nice concept, Celia -- big fish, little girl, equals scale incongruity. Two worlds, separated by a pane of glass. The child is abstracted nicely by backlighting so she becomes Everychild. As for human values, awe, curiosity, and perhaps a dose of mild fear, come to mind. So this shot draws on all three of my favorite principles of expression.
Too bad the fish did not show us a mouth full of teeth, wide open, coming at the little girl? (We can dream, right?)
