THE PERILS OF WINTER

This time of year is a difficult one for dog owners like myself who
like to run their dogs in the woods. Dead animal parts are hidden
around every turn as many of them don't make it through
the winter. As a result we often have to wrest
bloody, smelly, nasty parts like this skull from the jaws of our
supposedly domesticated pets. One of my dogs
very quickly returns to her feral roots when she comes
in contact with one of these freshly dead bones. If I try to pull
it from her she will threaten to kill me. As a result, she usually wins
that tug of war.

Seriously, its amazing to see the transformation in my otherwise
docile girl. And once she tastes that raw flesh it takes her
weeks to come back to her senses.

This particular skull had been put in a tree no doubt by a dog walker
who had passed through the park earlier in the day. I found it when I noticed my
dog trying desperately to climb the tree it was in.

Oh the joys of pet ownership.

Pretty gory, but a good reminder that as much as we love our pets and sometimes think of them as human-like, they are animals and have those wild beast genes in them. (Maybe the same could be said of us!) Great shot, btw!

OMG! About the biggest game my dogs get to fight for is a mole! You'd have thought 3000 years of domestication would have bred that out by now.
