Robert Campin's famous work seen at the Cloisters. circa 1425 - oil on wood.
The central panel of this small triptych shows the Annunciation (the archangel Gabriel's announcement to the Virgin Mary that she would miraculously conceive Jesus Christ). Joseph, Mary's spouse, is seen in his workshop in the right panel; the donor, presumably Inglebrecht of Mechelen whose coat of arms appears in the left window of the central panel, and his wife are shown kneeling in the left panel. This work (also called the Merode Alterpiece) dates from about 1425 and is in the then-new Flemish technique of oil colors on wood panels. It is also innovative in showing the Annunciation occurring not in a portico or an ecclesiastical setting but in a middle-class room of the patron's own time. In all this Campiri's art anticipates future developments in Flemish painting (source - The Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide, 19883)
