Emily's Butterfly Quilt

This is my butterfly quilt. I love butterflies and have been collecting different butterfly fabrics for years. I finally felt that I had collected enough of them to make myself a butterfly quilt large enough to be a bed spread.
I designed this quilt myself. The blocks with the white background have appliqued flowers and butterflies on them. Most of the butterfly and flower patterns were made up, but I got some of them from pattern books. Each of the blocks in between the applique blocks is an 8" block of one of the butterfly fabrics I have collected. Each butterfly fabric block is unique, and all of the fabrics on the applique butterflies are unique.
I finished piecing this quilt in June, 2004.
As of now, I am still quilting it, but I am nearing the finish line.
To quilt the blocks, I am outlining the appliqued butterflies and flowers and quilting a meandering path from a flower to the butterfly that is 2 blocks above it.

Absoultely beautiful! It reminds me of my carefree days of childhood, chasing butterflies and testing to see if I like butter with buttercups held under my chin. Your butterfly quilt has inspired me to make one similar too it. Thank you for sharing your quilt with the world. Happy stitching...........Maureen Thoms in Newfoundland

You have given me a lot of wonderful ideas for a butterfly quilt. It has that "warm, I want to cuddle up in it feeling" to it. The quilt is very beautiful work of art.

It's beautiful, Emily. I think John is right - your children will all want this quilt. I think you have to make more...

I have the very first quilt that my Mom ever made, … and I have the very last quilt that she made before she passed away. At one point her skills became so great that one of her quilt squares was accepted in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC to be added to the “Great American Quilt”. During her lifetime she probably made hundreds of them, every one of them hand stitched from scraps of old materials she found around the house. The two quilts that I own are the most precious things to me out of all the “riches” that I own, and are irreplaceable in my heart and life. Every winter I pull the nice heavy last quilt from my cedar chest and throw it on the bed to warm those chilly nights.
Hmmmm, … sometimes old biker dudes can surprise you huh?
The butterfly quilt here is beautiful, … and someday your children’s children will fight over who owns it. (Grin)
