A Golden Surprise, Vientiane, Laos, 2005

There are many sculpted images of Buddha at Vientiane's great Thatluang Stupa, among the most spectacular sights in Laos. This particular Buddha may, in the first instant you look at it, seem somewhat obscured by the soft background glittering with gilded flower petals. That is what I intended – to at first obscure detail by creating this brilliant distraction, which ultimately helps reveal detail with greater force than usual. Amazingly, the sharply focused face of Buddha snaps into into play and you may see, perhaps for the first time, new details that carry great meaning. Devoted Buddhists adorn the faces of these Buddha sculpted images with very thin strips of foil pounded from solid gold. And this face has patches of solid gold foil all over it, particularly on the nose, lips, and eyes. It is the Buddhist way of expressing devotion. This detail certainly makes the point of such devotion. The gilding is costly, the sight incongruous, the meaning glorious. It’s all in the surprising detail.

Thanks, Ruth, for your observation. You are not wrong. You are entitled to read the symbolism conveyed by the detail in this image in any way you might wish. I see the golden foil as symbols of Buddhist devotion and you see it as not only devotion, but surrender as well. Thanks for pointing out the contrast between the softly focused offerings in the background, and the sharply focused foil. That's what draws the eye directly to the key details.

i'm not sure that an offering of wealth to the Buddha is a way of accumulating more. that seems too egocentric for a Buddhist line of thought (feel free to correct me if i am wrong). i see the offering of gold to the Buddha as pure detachment - from greed and materialism. i look at this image and i can almost see the hands carefully pressing the small pieces of gold foil onto the statue, a sign of utter devotion and, perhaps, surrender. your inclusion of the background detail helps draw our attention to the golden patches on the Buddha's face.i noticed them straight away, but probably for that reason.

Thanks, Clara. Another thoughtful nugget of wisdom to chew on here. I can see how one would accumulate merit by offering value to the Buddha. But how does one cultivate detachment by doing so? I'll have to think about that one for awhile.

Beautiful caption of this Buddha's face. Offering what is costly to the Buddha is a way to accumulate merit and besides one cultivates dettachment.

An urge to come close and find the truth in the detail has obviously been ever more deeply ingrained in my shooter's soul by you, Tim. Golden light is an iconic symbol of warmth, beauty, and comfort. Gold has long represented wealth. The two merge here in an incongruous display of Buddhist devotion.

I am unaware of Buddhist teaching - yet the gold foil seems to have a history, because some of it seems fresh (still peeling) and some well rubbed into the face and from the history of the devotional placement of gold foil, I get sense a spiritual truth: there is endurance as symbolized by the face - the endurance of the race - a life - but, in every life there are moments of beauty and richness, of golden light. Often the history of golden light can be seen on the faces of those we know and love.

A golden image, because of the blurred golden petals which draw the attention of the viewer to the focus of the image.
