The Big Chicken

In the midsts of Marietta, at the intersection of the two major roads in the city, stands a North Georgia landmark. In all the urban and suburban sprawl it is unique. It's "The Big Chicken"

Everybody in North Georgia knows where "The Big Chicken" is and many directions are based on it. I once had an office "a quarter mile north of 'The Big Chicken'" Nothing else had to be said.

Oops, just realized it's a KFC, thought they are something else (serving chicken).

The food is just plain American fast food fare. It's KFC or Kentucy Fried Chicken for those old enough to remember. It's certainly nothing to write home about.

The architecture is uninspiring so form is not is secret.

That leaves location. But a major crossroads of an Atlanta suburb is still not very significant.

Why does "The Big Chicken" bask in such regional fame? I don't have a clue. It just does.

Is it famous for the location and design or the food is good too.

Oh, there is the standard KFC sign stuff and you can see it just to the left of TBC.

TBC was old when I moved to Atlanta in the early 1970s and it predates almost everyting around it. Originally it was red and white vertical stripes. It almost got torn down in the mid 1990s but was saved and rebuilt to its current and glorius configuration.

It really is an amazing landmark because it is so unassuming and cheesey and it's such an incredible disappointment when, after hearing about it, you actually see it.

The "Big K" deserves no mention at all and gets none!

So in the direction game does the Big K next door get any mentions?:-) That's an unusual sign for a KFC outlet Pops, is it very old? Everywhere I've been there's a picy of Col Saunders displayed out front. Thanks for giving us an insight into your town Pops as I find this really interesting.
