Phipss Convervatory
As a gift to the City of Pittsburgh from industrialist/philanthropist, Henry Phipps, it was the
largest conservatory in the United States and had the finest collection of tropical plants
acquired from the Colombian Exposition in Chicago When the Conservatory opened on December 7,
1893. From 1893 on, the Conservatory gained distinction as a repository of horticultural
excellence - a distinction that exists today.
